Suicide remains a significant mental health issue across the UK. In England and Wales, registered suicides in 2023 reached the highest level in decades, with men at notably higher risk—around three-quarters of suicides are male, with rates highest among middle-aged men (40–49). Many of those who die by suicide have been in recent contact with mental health services; young people with social, emotional, or mental health needs, and those who self-harm or have attempted suicide, also face elevated risk. National strategies are focusing on these groups, but more support is needed.
